Reason and For Real: The Rational EssayAn interesting article in this month's May 2020 issue of The Journal of Business published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology titled 'The Road to Reason and For Real' describes the advantages of using an HRR (in reference to rational essay) as an important building block for the Master of Science in Accounting program at the Graduate School of Business. The graduate program in accounting has been expanded from just one course to two required courses. The rational essay is used as the fifth module in the College of Accounting course work. For students considering entering the workforce as a new accounting graduate, this is a critical course in the accounting graduate program.The logic in this application sample has been organized to answer a question, namely, What is the reason? The rationale essay consists of nine units, which will allow the student to construct the particular reason as well as the framework for applying that reason. T he rational essay encourages the student to form a theme or interest, to develop argumentation using the knowledge learned in the rational essay sample and to share their ideas with a group. The rational essay will give the faculty the opportunity to check whether the rationale is applicable to the real world.The rationale essay must not only be written to answer the question what is the reason? It must be written to take the reader through an overview of the reason, the process that are involved in applying the reason to the real world, and the likelihood that the reasoning can be applied. The answer to the question is the reason, and how it can be applied, and the process that lead to an application, must be clearly explained.The rational essay may be organized as a series of logical and rhetorical exercises. It may include a discussion of the direction in which the argument takes the reader. The rationale essay is presented in the form of an informal conversation, or dialog, with the reader.The reason for the rational essay can also be developed using the assignments given to the student in the course. The reasons can be self-serving, but the faculty should have a basis for challenging the student to see whether the reasoning can be applied.The logical exercises are usually based on examples and case studies, and the case studies often focus on a particular company. The course work also includes a project. These will normally include the analysis of real or fictitious data sets, the response to questions from the faculty, a critical review of the professor's written paper, and a discussion with the reader.In conclusion, the reasoning in the rational essay is the key to the success of a career in accounting. Students can study and learn how to apply the reasoning in order to help them become the best they can be in accounting.
